What Color Bedding Makes the Room Look Bigger?

Incorporating the right colors into a space provides the illusion of extra space. Many people take great care in choosing their wall colors based on this idea but overlook another important element. Utilize the right color on your bedding to trick the eye into thinking a bedroom is larger than it really is. Does this Spark an idea?

Neutral Colors

Choose neutral colors to adorn your room’s bed. Lighter neutrals, including whites, tans and olives make your bedding blend with the rest of the space. Warmer neutrals also create a cozy, homey feel to the room, while lighter neutrals reflect more light to make the space seem larger. Avoid using white bedding as the stark color breaks up the room, making it seem smaller.

Light Hues

Lighter colors reflect light, while darker colors absorb light and make a space feel cavernous. This rule applies to more than just the room’s wall coloring. Extend the use of lighter colors to include your bedding. Cool shades of green, red and blue brighten the room and make it feel lighter and airier, creating the illusion of space. Use darker colors on the bedding’s trim to incorporate these shades into the room.

Wall Coloring

Create a flow through the space by incorporating the wall’s coloring in the bedding. Purchase bedding that is the same color, or a shade lighter, than the wall coloring to prevent the sheets from breaking up the space, making the room feel segmented and smaller. Use textures, stripes and other decorative elements of the same color in the throw pillows to add dimension to the space.

Other Ideas

Avoid covering the bed with several throw pillows, stuffed animals or other elements to prevent making the room feel cluttered. Push the bed against the wall to provide more open floor space, creating the illusion that the room is bigger than it actually is. Avoid purchasing a bed, including the frame, that is too large for the bedroom. This overwhelms the space, making the room feel tiny.
